ballon

Earlier heart valves that had narrowed had to be opened by a heart surgery, this brought which had a lot of health risks and longer recover period. However, with the advancement in medical technology we are now able to open the valves without any major surgery, by using balloon catheters to open the heart valves. This technique is called balloon valvuloplasty
Balloonplasty is done for patients who are suffering from narrowing or stenosis of the heart valves. The stenosis could be either in the left side valve or the right sided valve. The benefit of balloonplasty is that it is done by catheter technique without any surgery, cutting or general anaesthesia in the cardiac catheter laboratory.
Balloonplasty can be done for the mitral valve, aortic valve on the left and for the tricuspid valve or the pulmonary valve on the right side.In this procedure a catheter is passed from the leg artery or vein. If the Balloonplasty is required for the right sided valve, the catheter is passed from the vein in the groin under local anaesthesia. A balloon catheter which is has the balloon at the tip is passed through the vein till stenotic narrowed valve and the balloon is inflated. As the balloon inflated the narrowed valves expand. Following which the balloon is removed. This is a very good technique for mitral valve stenosis, pulmonary valve stenosis or aortic valve stenosis.

Benefits of Balloonplasty:

  • As there is no major surgery involved, patient no longer have to undergo trauma.
  • No post procedure complications.
  • Patients no longer need to stay in the hospital for 10-15 days. They can go home the next day.
  • Patient can resume work in 1-2 days.
  • The cost of treatment has significantly reduced.
